Chapter Nine

She’d wanted Bowie to kiss her. Had she lost her mind?

Sage banged a cleaned and sanitized pastry tray onto the rack and slammed another on top of it.

She couldn’t believe she’d done something as dumb as kissing his hand.

She rolled her eyes. For crying out loud. Who kissed a man’s hand?

Not just any man’s hand. Bowie’s. Her buddy. Her pal.

And now, tomorrow, she’d attend church with him.

Maybe she was just tired. That was the only excuse she had for doing such a ridiculous thing.

After tucking Ryder and Paisley into bed and leaving Ms. Bea to watch over them, she’d come to the bakery to finish the cleanup from this morning. Saturdays were hectic, she’d learned very quickly. And she’d made Ms. Bea promise to go home, put her feet up and take a nap at closing time, leaving the cleanup for Sage.

That Bea had agreed so easily fretted Sage no little amount. It was out of character. Bea must be in more pain than she let on.

After sanitizing all the trays, she started cleaning the rest of the shop. All the while, her mind whirled. She jumped from the hand kiss to the wonderful afternoon. The kids had loved it. She had loved it. They’d all needed it. And if she wasn’t mistaken, Bowie had a good time too.

So, why was she twisted up like a cinnamon stick over an innocent show of affection to an old friend who’d gone out of his way to help her and the children and to make her feel welcome?

Because today had felt like more than friendship.
